SMALLSWORD WITH AN ORMOLU HILT

WESTERN EUROPEAN c. 1740–1770

A fine smallsword with gilded bronze ormolu hilt and diamond-sectioned blade from the late Baroque period showing stylistic patterns transitioning towards the full-bodied rococo. The hilt has an original strong fire gilt surface. The blade is marked ‘IN TOL’ which points towards a Toledo manufacture but as many makers used popular and well-known maker and city markings to make their products more saleable, we are hesitant to point any exact maker or production center to this sword. The overall condition of the sword is very fine.
