SMALLSWORD WITH A BLACK HILT

ITALIAN c. 1690–1720

An early smallsword with a blackened hilt and large arches towards the protective plate which were typical for the style of  the turn of the 1700s. The blade is triangular and the grip copper bound. These black-hilted smallswords, often misleadingly called mourning swords, suited perfectly the dark-toned men’s outfits of the late 17th century and were used not only for funerals but also for other everyday events. This sword is in nice, original and untouched condition with some minor surface rust and pitting on the blade.
