HUNTING SWORD IN BAROQUE STYLE

2000,00

c. 1720–1740 GERMANY OR THE NETHERLAND

A fine quality hunting sword with a single guard hilt and staghorn grip. The rainguard engraved with galloping deer scene is turning over the byknife and fork pockets. The outer quillion of the guard is finely chiseled and sculpted in the form of an aggressive hog head. All the engraving and floral patterns show symmetrical late baroque style dating from 1700 to 1750s and marks our dating for this piece to 1720-40 just before one starts to see some rocaille and other assymetrical designs.

The blade of the sword is etched with remarkably bold deer encircled in frame. Above is depicted its destiny: a bucket of luring fruits or cabbages.

We can see rich etching pattern mixed with dogs chasing deers and hogs along the blade. The blade shows remaining fire gilding overall.

Leather scabbard with brass mounts ensuite with side tools.

Hunting swords like this were made for final killing thrust for the hunted prey but their quality and workmanship was establishing owners wealth and overall position in society rather than just being a tool for letting the blood.

Remarkably fine condition with its original scabbard. A high-standard object.
