NIMCHA SABRE
Morocco / 18th Century
An antique Moroccan nimcha sabre with a fine multi-grooved steel blade marked by the maker on the both sides of the forte. The steel crossguard is of a typical nimcha style and the hilt is bone with a decorated silver lower mount. The sword is in good antique condition with some signs of wear and some nicks on the blade edge.
These sabres, favoured by the 17th and 18th century pirates on the Mediterranean and Coastal Africa, are elegant and have historical significance. They were often used by Dutch merchants and they spread widely because of their peculiar appearance and practicality. They have been starting to get their respect and interest among the collectors for being real fighting stuff and favoured by the ‘bad guys’.
