ITALIAN RAPIER
RAPIER
Italy / c. 1560–1580
A fine and early steel-handled rapier. The finely chiseled handle is decorated with acanthus leaves closing and protecting the wearer’s hand turning towards the leave-decorated pommel. The blade is signed by Clemens Horn whose workshop in Germany is recorded at least from the 1580s onwards. Our rapier is of a type popular during 1560 onwards and it was very typical for gentlemen to have swords with famous export blades of the known masters or having the hilt in foreign design.
Our sword has original grip-binding and it has stayed unopened.
