GERMAN EARLY BURGONET HELMET
BURGONET HELMET
Nuremberg, Germany / c. 1530–1540
An extremely early burgonet with a very flat and unroped crest. The moveable pivoted peak and the hinged ear pieces are typical for the early period. The riveted neck plate and ear pieces have a boxed edge without roping, suggesting also an early style. The high quality of the single-piece forged skull makes us think if the skull was first a high quality visor helmet and adapted later as a burgonet. The peak has a Nurmeberg city marking outside on the edge. Inside we found an ‘N’ marking encircled by balls of Nuremberg. This marking of a single ‘N’ can be found mostly on visor helmets from the 1520-30s period but it is very rare to encounter this marking on burgonets. The helmet is throughout outstanding in quality, altough very plain and undecorated.
