HANPO WAR MASK
Japan / 19th Century
The so-called half mask hanpo was designed to protect the lower part of the face allowing its wearer to breathe freely. It was most commonly used by the Japanese foot soldiers carrying light armour and naginatas or Yari spears. The masks were often finished with a dark brown urushi lacquer.
The throat protection (yodari kake) made of three plates. The helmet securing pins (otayori) on the side of the chins. The silk laces (sukage) in blue. The mask is in nice overall condition.
