EUROPEAN ARMS
MEDIEVAL BRAZIL NUT POMMEL
SCANDINAVIAN c. 1050–1200
A large-sized medieval sword pommel made of iron in the so-called brazil nut style. This type of pommel has traditionally been regarded as a model of the Crusades period, but it may have an even older basis, as the pommel type has also been found in many Viking-style silver-decorated swords. The pommel is in excavated condition and it has been nicely cleaned by electrolysis.
