NIMCHA SABRE
Morocco / 18th Century
An antique Moroccan nimcha sabre with great proportions. The sword has a large but fine multi-grooved steel blade with eligible maker’s mark on forte. The steel crossguard is of a typical nimcha style and the hilt is bone with a simply decorated brass lower mount.
These sabres, favoured by the 17th and 18th century pirates on the Mediterranean and Coastal Africa, are elegant and have historical significance. They were often used by Dutch merchants and they spread widely because of their peculiar appearance and practicality. They have been starting to get their respect and interest among the collectors for being real fighting stuff and favoured by the ‘bad guys’.
This example is in fine antique condition and is our favourite on the lower-priced swords and sabres we currently have.
