SHAMSHIR SABRE
Ottoman Empire / c. 1680–1720
A very early silver-mounted Ottoman shamshir of a ”Turkenbeute” type. The leather-covered grip is with a higher central panel ending to an engraved silver pommel cap. The fine damascus crossguard is partly decorated with silver. The wide blade is of fine damascus. The scabbard with steel mounts has remains of gold koftgari work. The upper scabbard mount has a rare steel spring hinged on the scabbard slit closing the saber safely from water and dirt. These type of early sabres are often unrecognized to be extremely rare and early pieces of the Ottoman history.
