PUUKKO KNIFE FROM 19TH CENTURY FINLAND
FINLAND, 19th century
An early type of a finnish puukko knife, so-called ‘Hattutuppipuukko’ with a two-piece leather sheath which held the knife firmly in place. This type of puukko was typical for some villages in Ostrobotnia such as Vöyri and Ilmajoki, but the model was also produced elsewhere in the Western Finland.
The knife itself is a very simple one with a corkwood handle and a simple steel blade possibly made from an old file. The unusual sheath has been exposed to drying, but is exceptionally well preserved, with all parts intact. The knife is in original, untouched condition with some surface rust on the blade. The blade is firmly attached to the handle and the knife fits well in its sheath.
