SPANISH-ITALIAN RAPIER BY PEDRO DE VELMONTE

RAPIER BY PEDRO DE VELMONTE
blade in Toledo, Spain, hilt probably in Italy / c. 1600–1610

A fine South European rapier of great proportions. The blackened steel hilt with s-formed quillions has been made in Italian taste. The lowest protective ring has a pierced plate depicting a mythical siren. The facetted pommel is following the style of the facetted crossguard and quillions. The brass wiring seems to be original. The hilt is close to Norman Type 61. The ricasso is engraved with a crown and a text ‘***UNUS D**UDA IN TOLEDO’. The fullered steel blade is marked by the manufacturer ‘PEDRO DE VELMONTE EN TOLEDO’. The sword is in great antique condition.
