LATIN AMERICAN EAGLEHEAD-HILTED SABRE
POSSIBLY LATIN AMERICAN c. 1820–1840
A very fine officer sabre with a gilded bronze eagle-headed hilt. The crossguard has small langets fitting to its blued scabbard with gilt bronze mounts. All gilded parts are decorated with geometrical patterns and a snake is depicted in the middle of the crossguard. The higly polished steel blade has a wide fuller. No markings visible.
Stylistically this sabre falls into the first half of the 19th century and the strong fire gilt mounts against the blued steel confirm our dating. The sabre might originate from Mexico or South America, but we are not certain of its exact place of manufacture. We are keen to learn more about this sabre pattern.
The sabre is in excellent condition for its age. The scabbard remains areas of vivid blue.
