Western Europe / c. 1600–1620

A high-quality officer type gorget plate used on top of a thick leather coat as a single piece of armour on the field and occasions. The shape and small details such as the roped edges suggest origin of the Netherlands or France rather than German-speaking countries.

Gorgets of a similar style can be found in the Styrian Armoury, Graz and one exquisite German example made by Hieronymus Ringler is exhibited in the Wallace Collection (A234).
