ENGLISH SILVER MOUNTED HUNTING SABRE
England / Last quarter of the 17th century

A rare and fine silver mounted hunting sabre with a very decorative deer antler grip. A spherical pommel cap and richly engraved floral forms of the handle make this sabre almost unique in its style. Multisection blade with the commercial mark SAHAGVM (sahagum). Original leather scabbard with the original yellowed silver chape. The handle is marked with silver stamps.
The maker mark SAHAGVM has been widely copied by all european sword makers throughout the 17th century. The original SAHAGVM was a very famous spanish swordmaker, Alonso de Sahagún, el viejo (Sahagun the Elder), working as a master in Toledo in 1550-1573. His family continued the business at least until 1620-1635.
